week 6: Technorati

Technorati + Library 2.0

The keyword search for “Learning 2.0” in Blog posts, in tags and in the Blog directory experiment showed different results.

1. Learning 2.0 blog posts: 745 hits.

2. Learning 2.0 tags : 1,292 hits

3. Learning 2.0 blog directory : 89 hits

I tried this experiment on 1 Nov. at 1:42pm. Everyone would know by now that results differs depending on when the search was run, that is, depending on the date and time of the search. Also using slightly different terms affects the results - for instance, running a search using the plural form of a word gives different results (e.g. directory-directories).

I would like to quote Sarah Hughton's definition of L2.

"Library 2.0 simply means making your library's space (virtual and physical) more interactive, collaborative, and driven by community needs. Examples of where to start include blogs, gaming nights for teens, and colaborative photo sites. The basic drive is to get people back into the library by making the library relevant to what they want and need in their daily lives to make the library a destination and not an afterthought."

According to Hughton's theory, ACL 2.0 Learning online prgm. will make us equip well to help our patrons needs. However there are still some patrons who need basic technologies such as using OPAC and sending emails... so we have to run some courses for those continually ( I know how popular our compter class "click and learn" is). Before starting this progm. we ran a blog session for patrons. After the session, all the customers asked when would be next session.

Week 6:Del.icio.us

Del.icio.us

I've read Del.icio.us blog, and watched the video explaining about Del.icio.us social bookmarking.

It is a good site to share useful info with your collegues, friends and family.

I've added 13 Bookmarks so far. Some I chose the tags from examples and some I made the tags related to the contents. The link to my account is : http://del.icio.us/sonamu

I like Del.icio.us - after bookmarking the items that you want visit again, you can easily go back and find out new info and share it with others. All you have to do is click on the tags! What a fantastic site! Thanks elgar!

Week 5: Rollyo

The link of my account is :http://www.rollyo.com/profile.html

I enjoyed playing around on Rollyo. I checked out online shopping sites, food & dinning sites, among others. After I've browsed through them, I created my search rolls and added the subject " free colouring sheets" for my story time on Sat. If you're a Sunday school teacher, have young kids or are just fond of colouring and such, and if you are interested in things related to the Bible, then this is a good site to get free colouring sheets:
http://eliab.com/Eliab_Links/Eliab_Links/Eliab_com/Christmas_Page/Colouring_Sheets/colouring_sheets.html

This site offers colouring sheets based on the Bible - such as scenes from the book of Genesis, Joseph series, Eliab...... (when God created the heaven and earth........).

I think "Rollyo" is a good site for those who have particular sites that they use frequently. Rollyo could possibly replace your 'favourites' engine on your Internet Explorer.

Week 5: Library Things

Library things : I signed up and listed some my favorite books, this is my URL: http://www.librarything.com/catalog/pinetreesonamu

If you have a look at my 'librarything.com' webpage you will see that I've only listed classics (not Harry Potter ) - I love to read them and watch movies based on those books (I find this is one of the advantages of liking old classics - most of them have been turned into movies!).

I found this website absolutely amazing - all I had to do was run a search using the title of my favourite books and the website came up with a list of the books by different publishers!!

week 5: Online image generator

Flower Text - ImageChef.com

As there were too many image generators, I couldn't decide on which ones to choose. After much consideration, I chose Visual Poetry generator and My Little Pony generator.

Using Visual Poetry generator I created "Be happy" in flowers because I want everyone to be happy. I used blogger tab to blog the image.

With "My Little Pony" generator, I played around with the colours a bit before deciding on my final product. I chose pink and black first and it turned up looking like a very funny pony (I thought it would make a very beautiful pony). After my first try, I decided to go with different shades of brown and it looked just perfect (as you can see above). I loved playing around with different generators. This one I saved in my computer and uploaded it to my blog.

Week 4 :

Feedster: The site is introduced as a research assitant. I searched for Kim Jong Il, the North Korean leader, and got News (217 hits), Blogs (2969 hits), and Podcasts (2 hits). I then typed George W. Bush in the search box, and I got News (1566hits),blogs (37573 hits), and Podcast (10 hits). Through this short experiment I could see that blogs are very popular nowadays.

Syndic8.com: I clicked on News, podcasts, tags .... I didn't find this website very interesting.

Topix.net: This site is amazing. You can read the world news, local area news, and you can also share your thoughts via the Topix.net forum, and comment on the news. When I searched for New York in the United State, it showed an "interactive graph", which provides for dates. Users can click on a certain date on that graph and access the news on New York published on the date of choice. I liked this site very much.

Week 4: RSS and Newsreader

RSS and Bloglines
I've read the tutorial materials from Palinet and Using Bloglines Tutorial and I have found them helpful. I now know how to sign up bloglines and subscribe RSS, XML feeds. I decided to subcribe to 10 feeds, including Sean Bolton's Flickr Photo Album, Unshelved and BBC News. I like Sean's photos - most of Sean's photos are so beautiful. The below webpage address is a link to one of Sean's photos. When I saw the photo, I felt that the sky was on fire. This is the URL; http://www.flickr.com/photos/net-adept/280815401/in/set-72157594265102209/
I think it is amazing that the news feeds automatically get sent to me - I think I might do away with reading newspapers altogether!!

Week 3: Something Technology Related

This is my brick phone and CD player

We can see many teenagers who wear earphones listening music, shaking their shoulders, and moving their lips on the road. Among our customers, I often see them talking with someone with their very(?) small cellphones. However, Mp3, or very small fancy cellphones are rather foreign to me. I use a CD player that my daughter doesn't use anymore and my mobile phone looks like a brick, but I like it very much, because I can see it clearly and hold it firmly. It sounds like I'm following new technologies a step late, however it's ok, as long as I'm interested in learning new things, I won't fall too behind.

Week 3: Trading Cards

Using bighugelabs.com, made a trading card. It was easy and quick, enjoyed. One day I want to make a calendar using my own Photos. I'll have to take lots of Photos for it.

week 3: Photos & Images

1. Flickr Mashups

I've been exploring the website Flickr. This is a great site to share your photos with others.I've been learning a lot through this training even though it has been taking my evening time a lot(?). You would not realize how quickly time passes while looking at photos and clicking here and there and learning new things. After having gone through the Flickr's 6 step tour and having looked at "Popular tags Interesting-Last 7 days", I created an account and uploaded two photos.I added one of them to my blog.
